I Would Have Never Guessed That It Still Had Refrigerant

2023, November 14

I'd like to share this oddity. This is a car we bought a few years back. It was sitting in an Indian Reservation field since 1972 and left for dead and it was already devoid of the FE 352 engine when we bought it. So lately when time permits we've been cleaning and gutting the interior out. So it currently sits in the shop where I work.

As you can see it's a fine unit. Hahaha, I can't even type that with a straight face. But the other day it starting hissing whilst I was working. At first I thought one of the +40 year old tyres finally let go but the car was still sitting level and so I looked deeper and the noise was coming from under the bonnet. I mean there's not much left under the there, so with adamant curiosity I opened it and wow the air conditioning system was left connected by whomever removed the engine and it still had refrigerant after all this time. The hose just finally gave out.

You can see the oil the R12 carried with it as it left the ruptured hose. But who would have thought that still had any fluid whatsoever left in it.

An oddity indeed.
