1966-1968 Ford Galaxie Sway Bar Options

Rant 1

Hi All,

I was hoping to pick a few brains here about possible larger sway bars for the '66-'68 galaxie.

Seems almost common knowledge that the desirable sway bar comes from a 1977-'78 Thunderbird.

Well I'm off to the scrap yard tomorrow and in the lot are:

1979 Thunderbird 1972 galaxie 1976 LTD

I need 2 larger sway bars for now, so would anyone kindly tell me if these cars are good candidates or have similar sway bars to the '77-'78 T-Bird?

Thank you,

Rant 2

I stayed up late Friday night researching the sway bar possibilities. There was a 1972 Ranchero in the yard, we removed the Ranchero's and the '79 T-Birds. The T-Birds was the thickest, the Ranchero's wasn't as thick in dia. but it still quite larger than the coat hanger used in the '66 and '68 galaxies .

Cheers,

I had a chance yesterday to fit up one of the bigger sway bars we removed from a '72 Ranchero and a '79 T-Bird. Attached are pics. Since even the original sway bar is far away from the oil filter, so I can only assume you do not have an FE engine.

These larger sway bars will not work in the stock holders bolted onto the frame. But at first glances I believe I can utilize the Ranchero's and T-Birds holder and just have to make a little leveling plate (where the two halves of the frame come together there is a step) and drill two new holes under the arch of the galaxie frame and bolt the mounts there as they were in the cars we removed them from.

But as you can see, there is a substantial difference in diameter difference between the galaxie and the others. I didn't have time to properly clean the T-birds sway bar, so the one I temporarily fit was the Rancheros. The T-Birds is even thicker.

From the scrap yard, the sway bars were 15 dollars each.

Note : In the end, we bought Jay Leno's sway bar. Read about that here Jay Leno's Sway Bar

None of the sway bars from other cars would fit properly. They could, maybe bolt in, but would come in contact with the strut rod when hitting a large bump or deep hole.

Cheers!
