1973 Chevrolet Caprice Convertible Mark IV Big Block 454 with AC
2023, November 14
I find this interesting. I knew GM and MOPAR always garnered more money, but the logistics of finance to restore that rotted hulk of a '73 Caprice Classic convertible to even #2 condition would far exceed the realized value.
Now I know Chevrolet made close to a million full size cars for 1973. Of which only 6,000 were convertibles. Chevrolet only had two convertibles by 1973 and dropped the rest, those were the Caprice Classic and Corvette.
I wish I had a further breakdown of how many of those 6,000 convertibles were ordered with the 454 and air conditioning. I bet it's a quarter or less. From what I've read air conditioning for this year was a 410 dollar option and seeing how the oil embargo from '72 was still in full swing, who in their right mind would spend extra for a fuel thirsty, pathetic horsepower, laden with emissions big block. The base price for a '73 Caprice Convertible was 5,000 dollars, which was a lot of money for a Chevrolet. By the time you load that up with options you could get into a reasonable and higher class Buick or Oldsmobile.
Well I know of at least one egotistical maniac who shelled out for a 1973 454 air conditioned Caprice Classic convertible; the fellow who ordered mine back in '73.
Cheers.
