Hello,

Well this isn't an exciting post, but for those making exhaust hangers or replacing the worn out or rotted rubber pieces in an old one might find this intriguing.

A while back, I made rear exhaust hangers for the LTD. Now the LTD came from the factory with the cheesy low frills Y code 390 with single exhaust. I used the existing one sided exhaust hanger as a template and duplicated it best I could and also made the mirror image best I could. Now I had to guess on the durometer on the initial rubber material. Well I guessed wrongly. It's too soft and the rear tail pipes are too wibbly wobbly.

Enter round two with the correct durometer EPDM rubber.

This the original one I made for both sides.

The rubber I had chosen originally had a durometer of 50A. The second round of rubber is 80A and is spot on for rigidity.

So I sliced this up to make the strips and then powder coated the hangers I made and the clamps as well as used stainless hardware.

Like I mentioned earlier 80A EPDM rubber was the ticket. I just wish I could have found that hard rubber with a woven core for extra strength. McMaster only has the non reinforced in 1/4" thick EPDM rubber sheet. I did order the rough cut version to help lock it in place.

I guess only time will tell (cheap reference to the band Asia ). The woven core kept any cracks or cuts from traversing across the material and quickly separately the material.

This rubber is EPDM rubber and so is UV stable and rated for outdoor usage, which as long as it doesn't get a cut, split or tear started in it should last a long time.

If anyone should know where to get a woven fiber core 1/4" thick rubber sheet with an 80A durometer rated for the proper temp range, UV and otherwise outdoor usage please feel free to chime in.

The stainless dealy bobbers in the picture aren't the tips. Those are the resonators. The tips are regular looking angle down tips that exit from under and beyond the bumper. The stock exhaust exited almost from underneath the bumper. I extended this because I wanted to get the exhaust gas away from the rear tail lamp trim FORD lettering and LTD spear. The acids in the exhaust just pitted those originals ones to no end. I was fortunate to buy an NOS LTD spear for much less than the average price going for on Fleece-Bay. Think 1200 dollars, yup, for a spear and emblem....... Plus I bought NOS FORD letters for the deck lid and new tail lamp assemblies including the lenses. The darn complete new tail lamp assemblies (minus bucket) are pretty darn pricey as well, about 250 a piece. So I really want to endeavor to keep those as nice as possible.

Cheers
